Biodiversity benefits

Good SuDS design can create new habitats and rehabilitate or enhance existing ones, design considerations go far beyond the contribution that planting makes to functionality of the drainage system.

Landscapes and drainage systems that support diverse habitats and the associated ecosystems provide a healthy and stimulating environment that can add value to urban living. The water within a SuDS component or scheme is vital for the growth and development of plants and animals. Biodiversity benefits can be delivered by even small, isolated components, but the greatest value is likely to be delivered where SuDS are planned as part of wider green landscapes and they can assists with wildlife connectivity.

With good design, SuDS provide shelter, food and foraging and breeding opportunities for a variety of wildlife species including plants, amphibians, invertebrates, birds, bats and other mammals.
