Celebrating SuDS in 2020 - #SuDSAwards winners revealed

The 2020 susdrain SuDS Awards 2020 reached a thrilling finale on Thursday 16 July 2020 with a virtual ceremony announcing this year's winners and highly commended projects together with the 2020 SuDS Champion, voted for by the industry and the Lifetime Achievement Award decided by susdrain’s Partners and Supporters.

Established and led by CIRIA through susdrain (www.susdrain.org), the second susdrain SuDS Awards showcased and celebrated the delivery of high-quality sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) and attracted over 40 fantastic award submissions from across the UK.

The projects entered into this year’s awards show that the quality of SuDS across the industry is improving, placing a stronger focus on delivering wonderful places and spaces for people and wildlife, as well as managing flood risk.

We are delighted to announce that the 2020 susdrain overall  winner is Arup, Cardiff City Council and Natural Resources Wales for ‘Greener Grangetown’  – a project covering 12 Victorian streets and 550 properties, developed from the original aim of removing surface water that entered Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water’s combined sewer network. Greener Grangetown delivers resilience to climate change and urbanisation by providing extra capacity in the combined sewer system, reduces CSO spills into the River Taff and reduces operational costs.
The judges commented how the project was: “… so well considered and so extensive that it was impossible to say anything negative about it. Clever systems are used to convey water for which the energy savings have been calculated and the residents love it”.

As well as showcasing projects, the SuDS Awards also recognise and celebrate the Champions that go the extra mile to inspire, inform and influence others to get on board, share good practice and deliver SuDS. Winning the public poll, our 2020 SuDS Champion is George Warren of the Greater London Authority and we awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award to Bob Bray of Robert Bray Associates for his success throughout the years in encouraging SuDS delivery.

Paul Shaffer, Associate at CIRIA said: “It’s fantastic to share and celebrate the industry’s achievements in SuDS delivery with the Awards. The susdrain SuDS Awards are now becoming the pinnacle of the two year susdrain project cycle. We’re hopeful that more organisations will partner and support us as we continue to inspire the delivery of high-quality SuDS schemes."

Huge congratulations to all our winners, those that were highly commended and of course thank you to all those who entered the competition for sharing your wonderful SuDS schemes.
